From: Thursday 02 April 2015, 10:00

The Romania Green Building Council will initiate a demonstration project to design and build Romania's greenest and most educational playground in the North of Bucharest.  Green residential project developer Alesonor will provide space and construction services for the initiative.

This information session will provide details to green building solution providers  interested to be involved in this unique demonstration project.  An "integrated design charrette" will be held with RoGBC staff,  Alesonor's design team, providers of materials, technology, and services relevant to playgrounds, and, most importantly, children of all ages who will tell us how they want the playground to be.

More preliminary information on the project from Alesonor’s design team:

Our goal is to design and execute a playground that matches our concern for sustainability and bioclimatic design, but also incorporates elements with high educational value for the children using it. We will use elements with very low carbon footprint: materials and earth from the site, repurposed material and recyclable materials like  stone gabions, wood, metal and glass.  Renewable energy from the wind and sun will provide the lighting for the playground.

The orientation of the playground will take into account the position of the sun for light and shadowing, the absorption of water from the ground and provide protection from strong winds by carefully placed evergreen trees and lowering part of the playground to offer a more comfortable and safer environment.  The space will serve as a place for exploration, education and inspiration for other project developers to follow and generate conversation in the family of the importance of protecting our planet.

The centerpiece of the playground will be a solar clock, with a compass indicator and the entire space organized towards the four horizon points with a significant element associated to each: Fire in the South (aligned with the sun), Wind in the East (the main wind direction), Earth in the North and Water in the West. Each element will have its own story behind it and each green construction material will be presented with its own unique properties in information plates incorporated within the decor.

All of these elements will raise the awareness of both adults and children about sustainability and bioclimatic elements that come into play when designing a healthy and natural environment and will create curiosity for the children by combining regular playground elements (swings, slides, etc) with more unconventional but educational elements.
